According to this New York Times article, the Financial Action Task Force, a global body tasked with combating money laundering and terrorist financing, is now encouraging international governments to treat tax crimes as a possible red flag for predicate offenses.
This is just one indicator of a larger trend toward international cooperation in investigations of tax crimes. While businesses are typically at the center of such investigations, individuals and investors must also beware.
The task force has no enforcement powers of its own, but the recommendation “means the proceeds of tax crimes must now be considered” by governments.
