 International Crimes

Florida Federal Criminal Defense Attorney, David J. Joffe focuses on criminal defense of persons accused of white collar crimes, including international crimes. David J. Joffe has personally handled over 300 Federal cases. Call today for a confidential consultation.

International crimes generally fall into two categories: criminal offenses against the world community, including acts of terrorism or war that threaten world order and security, crimes against humanity, and genocide; or transnational criminal acts, including drug trafficking, money laundering, financial crimes, and willful damage to the environment.

Drug trafficking is the most common international crime. The DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) enforces laws pertaining to drug crimes under the Controlled Substances Act, see 21 U.S.C. § 841, et. seq. The penalties for a drug trafficking conviction will depend upon the drug being trafficked, the quantity, and the number of prior convictions, if any.

U.S. government estimates indicate that 800,000 to 900,000 victims are trafficked globally each year in a growing human trafficking problem. Some 17,500 to 18,500 of those are trafficked into the United States. The Department of Justice prosecutes human traffickers under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, 22 U.S.C. § 7101, et. seq., whether the victims were smuggled for sexual exploitation, or to work as agricultural, sweat shop workers, or domestic servants. Under federal law, human traffickers may be prosecuted even where nonviolent coercion is used to force victims to work in the belief they would be subject to serious harm. Some states have their own laws pertaining to human trafficking, including the state of Florida, where human trafficking offenses constitute first and second degree felonies.

If you or someone you know is involved in an international crime, drug trafficking, or human trafficking investigation, it is crucial that you consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney at Joffe & Joffe.
