Government fraud typically involves making false statements, making false claims, mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the government. These types of fraud often take place in connection with federal government contracting, federal and/or federally-funded entitlement programs (such as public housing), agricultural programs, defense procurement fraud, educational programs, and corporate fraud.

As they relate to federal government contracting, investigations often involve bribery in contracts or procurement, collusion among contractors, false or double billing, false certification of the quality of parts or of test results, and substitution of bogus or otherwise inferior parts.

Statutes used to prosecute government fraud are included in 18 U.S.C. § 1001 (false statements), 18 U.S.C. § 287 (false claims), 18 U.S.C. § 371 (conspiracy to defraud the government), 18 U.S.C. §§ 1341, and 18 U.S.C. 1341, 1343 (wire fraud).

These actions are called qui tam lawsuits, and the private citizens who file them are called whistleblowers. Whistleblowers receive a percentage of the recovery against the defendant.
